The Finish Line

In 2024, photographer and ultra runner Herman Desmet dedicated over seven months to preparing his body for the grueling 177-kilometer Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, one of the world’s most challenging trail races. His determination drove him to log hundreds of miles through dense forests and endure punishing stepmill sessions in the gym—no big mountains in Belgium his homecountry to train for the mountainous terrain of the Alps. The effort paid off.

In the latest issue of Polar Journal, Herman reveals the grit, passion, and meticulous preparation behind his remarkable journey towards the finish line.

If you, like Herman, are planning big goals for 2025, in Polar Journal #4 we share tips for high-impact fitness resolutions, plus we cover how to build a solid foundation with base training. Finally, if you’re braving the winter chill, we break down how cold weather impacts performance and what you can do to adapt.
