Optical Heart Rate

Optical heart rate uses light to measure your heart rate, providing real-time data, and insight on the heart's activity during sports, sleep, and everything between.

What is optical heart rate monitoring?

Simply put, optical heart rate monitoring (OHR) is a method to measure a person’s heart rate using light to track blood flow variations. An optical heart rate monitor shines a bright light through the skin and detects the intensity of the light reflecting back from the skin to the sensor.

One of the biggest benefits of optical heart rate tracking is the ease of use. Because of its convenience, this technology is often integrated into wearable devices like watches and fitness trackers, making it suitable for heart rate tracking during your workouts, while you sleep, or if you want to track your heart rate round the clock.

How does optical heart rate monitoring work?

When your heart beats, it pumps blood to your arteries, making the blood flow stronger and reducing the amount of returning light. Between the heart beats, the blood flow is weaker in your wrist, and more light is reflected back. Measuring the time between high- and low-light intensities enables the device to measure beat-to-beat time intervals and calculate heart rate from that data.

Gen 4

The next generation of optical heart rate monitoring

Since we introduced the world’s first wireless heart rate monitor, we haven’t stopped perfecting the way we measure heart rate.

Powered by Elixir biosensing technologies, the next generation of our wrist-based optical heart rate monitor offers the most accurate optical heart rate measurements in a Polar watch ever. The new sensor has been redesigned to further reduce interference caused by movement and light leakage, and improve power efficiency to provide accurate readings round the clock.

Optical heart rate vs. ECG

ECG, or electrocardiogram, and optical heart rate monitoring are two different ways of measuring the same thing: heart rate. A traditional chest strap with an HR sensor measures heart rate by analyzing the heart's electrical activity, providing highly accurate reference-level readings.

OHR uses a technique called photoplethysmography (PPG) to measure changes in blood volume under the skin. Theoretically, it is possible to measure the PPG signal from anywhere on the body: your finger, earlobe, temple, or wrist, for example.

Both methods have their pros and cons, and determining the best one might depend on the specific use case. Apart from the technology used to measure heart rate, the main difference lies in how you wear the measurement devices, with OHR being notably convenient for continuous tracking.

  • ECG Electrocardiogram
  • OHR Optical Heart Rate

How accurate is OHR?

One of challenges of optical heart rate tracking is dealing with hand movement. With each new generation of our OHR technology, we have introduced improvements to reduce motion interference and enhance precision.

Based on our validation studies, OHR powered by Polar Elixir biosensing technologies can offer heart rate readings that closely resemble ECG-based measurements in many of the most popular sports, mainly running and cycling.

Optical Heart Rate

OHR enables heart rate monitoring from the wrist, providing real-time data, and insight on the heart's activity during sports, sleep, and everything between.

Blood Oxygen Level

SpO2 is a non-invasive measurement of the oxygen saturation in red blood cells to indicate the effectiveness of the body’s ability to transport oxygen. It’s especially useful for high-intensity–or high-altitude–workouts.

Skin Temperature

Nightly skin temperature monitors fluctuations in core body temperature during sleep to provide insights on thermoregulation and sleep quality.

Wrist-ECG

Electrocardiogram monitoring from the wrist provides valuable insights into the heart's electrical activity and rhythm for a better understanding of cardiovascular health and performance.
